Surprise, spring is here….are you ready to invite this long awaited season into your home?
We all know about spring-cleaning, that desire to clean and declutter your home as the weather gets warmer and the days get longer. But what about your decor, do you switch it out seasonally? With Spring here, this is the perfect time to attack some simple decor swap-outs to help you welcome in the new season.
1. Clean Windows and Lighten Window Treatments
After giving your windows a deep clean to erase all the residue of the past winter, the fun part begins! Luxe velvet, dark polyester blends, and other heavier fabrics can be carefully packed away until next winter. Hanging light-filtering linens, knotty silks, and breezy cottons will make your space feel light & fresh. Keep in mind, curtains can be a pricey so make sure you get a color and/or design that you know you’ll love for many springs to come.
2. Reassess bookcases and shelves….add some color!
Presuming you have already declutter & “spring cleaned’ your home, you may have found some new space on your shelves. If not, thoughtfully go through you books and decor again, you’ll probably come across some books you can donate/gift and decor you can pack away for next autumn. Now that you’ve made space consider adding pieces that you love! Small colorful vases with flowers, keepsakes from travel, cute baskets, and those photos you’ve been wanting to frame now have a place. This is great opportunity to showcase your interests and express your personality.
3. Refresh Your Pillows
Switching out your throw pillows for the season, is the quickest and most impactful update you can make to your sofa. Consider lighter tones, neutrals, and interesting fabrics for spring inspired update. The pillow fun doesn’t have to stop at your sofa, consider adding few fresh throw pillows to your bed, a bench, or an accent chair in need of a lil’ style. The great thing about throw pillow covers is they are easy store when not in use and can be mixed and match every season to bring a different vibe to your space. They’re the ideal decor accessory.
4. Plants, plants, plants…
It’s time to once again…test your green thumb skills. Did some of your house plants not make it through the winter? It happens. Good news is this is the perfect time to try again, the days are longer, which means more sunlight! The trick to plant longevity, is doing a little research to determine which plant species best fits the location in your home where you plan to place it. If it’s a shady corner, choose plants that thrive in shade and don’t require much sun. If your not up for the plant maintenance challenge, see number 5.
5. Use Faux Plants (sparingly)
Is there a place in your home that just doesn’t get much natural light, or watering a live plant would require acrobatic skills? Those spots are perfect for faux plants. Just make sure you choose plants that look a lot like the real thing. Faux plants are fine, but tacky, unreal, looking faux plants are just sad.
6. Swap Warm Blankets for Lightweight Throws
Swapping out that thick cozy, fuzzy warm blanket for something a bit lighter is also the perfect opportunity to bring something visually interesting into your space. You can choose a lightweight throw in a fun color that screams “spring.”
7. Add Color!
Spring is all about color! Take a walk through you home and think about were you can add some color whether it’s with a decorative sculpture, wall hanging, or even grabbing a paint brush and renewing a piece of furniture that would otherwise fade into the background.
8. Freshen Up with Florals
My favorite way to celebrate spring at home is with fresh cut flowers! During the colder months my vases are filled with eucalyptus, but when spring comes so do the colorful flowers. Keeping a few vases filled with beautiful, fresh flowers is a guaranteed mood lifter. If you do only one thing to freshen up your space for spring….fresh cut flowers should be the move!
9. Update your Scents
Typically during the winter season people are drawn to warm and cozy scents, such as cinnamon, balsam, and vanillas. Spring is about new beginnings, so fill your diffuser with floral and bright essential oils such as lavender, lemongrass, and neroli. While you’re at it, pack away your winter scented candles and replace them with light herb scented candles, anything that makes you feel fresh!
10. Refresh Your Patio Decor
If you have outdoor space, you’re really lucky because spring is typically the beginning of the three seasons where your patio will get a lot of attention! A patio update can be fairly simple. Start with washing cushion covers…if they are badly tattered or stained, consider new covers. Also, consider lighting, you want to enjoy your outdoor space at sunsets and well into the evening, adding string lights is an easy way to add a few more hours to a patios usability. Last, but impactful, is updating your furniture, and this doesn’t mean you have to buy a new set. Perhaps your patio set has lost its lustre, which they often due after a few winters, adding a coat of paint in a fresh new color is a definite game changer.
